Genre Conventions of Indie Music Videos

INDIE- the videos tend to be a variety of genre conventions; dark, bright monotone or a mixture, depending on the tone/atmosphere lyrics and composition of indie music videos also use both narrative or performance based videos with either the whole band being featured or just the main vocalist. Also the visuals used in indie videos tend to be more symbolic rather than just illustrative of the lyrics. Furthermore some videos don’t even feature the artists at all. It is this variation that has given indie videos a reputation for being quite versatile. Generally the clothing worn by indie artists is casual giving a down to earth quality to their image.

Genre Conventions of R&B/Hip Hop Music Videos

R&B/HIP HOP- similar to pop songs R&B/Hip Hop tend to have the artists lip syncing to the song with them located in a narrative setting ie a nightclub, mansion or tropical beach. The mise-en-scene of the music videos usually depicts the lyrics of the songs or as a backdrop for the type of lifestyle the lyrics are depicting. Provocative female dancers are also a common feature of R&B/Hip Hop music videos highlighting the nature of the lyrics. ‘Bling’ and flash cars are also used in the videos to promote the rich lifestyle that R&B/Hip Hop promote/portray.

Genre Conventions of Pop Music Videos

POP- the videos are usually performance based with choreographed dance routines or with a narrative storyline that connotes the lyrics. The band/artist usually lip syncs to the song and the rhythm of the editing matching the pace of the song which is normally fast paced in pop songs. The outfits worn by the band/artist is generally trendy mainstream clothing. The overall atmosphere of the videos is lively, bright and upbeat with a carefree feel; even slower sadder pop songs usually have a light and carefree video. The fun and lively nature of videos appeals to a younger audience.

Intro

Hello, my name is Jess Colclough and this is my A2 media studies advanced portfolio project. In this project my main piece will be a music video as well as two ancillary products. I will be creating the actual music video, a digipak for the album release and an advert. In order to do this to the best of my ability i will also be doing a lot of research into music videos, the genre conventions they follow and the techniques they use to make a video successful. I will then be applying this to my work throughout the production process. I will also plan and evaluate my work rigorously to ensure the outcomes are professional and ‘sell’ the music to a specific audience to ensure its success.
